Southwest Illinois Family Medicine Residency Curriculum

Rotations

Resident rotations are divided into one-month blocks of equal length for the year. The rotation sequence is determined by each resident's individual call schedule. 

Family medicine residents rotate through six clinical sites:

PGY-1 Schedule

Assessments, chronic disease management, interdisciplinary teams
Family medicine inpatient service (four rotations) HSHS St. Elizabeth's Hospital Patients admitted to the rehabilitation, general medicine and telemetry medicine floors
Obstetrics HSHS St. Elizabeth's Hospital Vaginal deliveries, c-sections, peripartum and newborn care
Procedures Faculty Clinic procedures including colonoscopy, excisional bipsies, vasectomy, IUDs, colposcopy
Inpatient pediatrics SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital Admission, patient care, follow-up planning, discharge
Outpatient pediatrics Scott Air Force Base
Local community
Well child visits, acute illnesses, hospital follow-up, long-term treatment
Nursery HSHS St. Elizabeth's Hospital Newborn care, circumcisions, studying newborn pathologies
Sports medicine Faculty Assist SSM/SLU SOM sports medicine faculty, community sports medicine and orthopedic physicians
Emergency medicine HSHS St. Elizabeth's Hospital

PGY-2 Schedule

Family medicine inpatient service (two rotations) HSHS St. Elizabeth's Hospital Act as senior resident on night float, manage general and telemetry medicine patients
Obstetrics (two weeks)/Research+EBM (two weeks) HSHS St. Elizabeth's Hospital/faculty  Care for laboring and postpartum mothers and newborns/backup senior for Family Medicine Inpatient Service
Research+EBM (two weeks)/Obstetrics (two weeks) Faculty/HSHS St. Elizabeth's Hospital Care for laboring and postpartum mothers and newborns/backup senior for Family Medicine Inpatient Service
Gynecology Scott Air Force Base Skills related to gynecology and long activng reversible contraception management, optional participation in gynecologic surgery
Surgery HSHS St. Elizabeth's Hospital and outpatient clinics Assist on inpatient and outpatient procedures
Pediatrics emergency medicine SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital Pediatric trauma, minor procedures
Dermatology Scott Air Force Base, faculty Diagnosis and treatment of common conditions, optional participation in dermatologic surgery
Behavioral medicine Faculty Mental health, pain management, resources, presentation
Intensive Care Unit HSHS St. Elizabeth's Hospital Severely ill patients, ventilator management, critical care issues
